In brief: Call for proposals for Nimes and Montpellier rail bypass

Posted on October 1, 2008 by Matthieu Desiderio

Réseau Ferré de France (RFF), the French railway infrastructure owner and manager launched today a call for proposals for Nîmes and Montpellier high speed rail bypass.

The contractor will be in charge of the project construction and operation, under a Partnership Contract (Contrat de Partenariat, a new form of Public-Private Partnership. For more details about Partnership Contracts, please see the three articles about the “First French-American Workshop on Public Transportation & Innovative Financing”: 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3)

This new 70-kilometer long high speed rail line, constitutes another extension toward Spain. It will be linked to the Méditerranée HSR line. Moreover, these new tracks will also allow to remove freight traffic from Nîmes and Montpellier city centers, as part of the Corridor D (Valence-Lyon-Turin-Budapest) of the European rail network.

The project will be financed jointly by the French National government, local governments (mostly the Languedoc-Roussillon region), and the private sector.
