Frank Appel, new DHL (Deutsche Post) President, inaugurated the company’s new European hub in Leipzig (Germany). Both German Foreign Affairs (Frank-Walter Steinmeier) and (Wolfgang Tiefensee) Transport Secretaries were part of the ceremony.
Frank Appel explained the multiple reasons why DHL hub has been set up in Leipzig: its proximity from the Eastern Europe growing markets, the fact that long-range planification in Leipzig guarantees DHL to be allowed late night flights to take-off and land, the future of Leipzig airport with new rail and road connections, and also the fact that employees in Leipzig seem to be highly motivated to run this new platform.
Total investment in the airport represents a total amount of €300 million. The new hub is 48,000 square feet, and Deutsche Post will generate 3,500 direct jobs, and 7,000 other jobs in the Leipzig area, and DHL expects to handle 2,000 tons of freight every night by 2012.
