A new eye on transport issues…

In brief: New intermodal transport website

Posted on March 19, 2008 by Matthieu Desiderio

In a joint press release, the French Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Land Planning (Ministère de l’Écologie, de l’Energie, du Développement durable et de l’Aménagement du territoire), the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME, Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Energie) and the Association for the Development of Vocational Training in Transport and Logistics (AFT-IFTIM, Association pour le développement de la Formation Transport et Techniques d’Implémentation et de Manutention) announced the creation of the website ViaCombi (http://www.viacombi.fr/) to promote combined and multimodal transport modes.

Following the Environment Roundtable (Grenelle de l’Environnement) during which participants pointed out carbon dioxyde emissions from road transport account for 94% of total freight transport emissions, promoting multimodal and low-emission transport modes (rail, waterways, short-sea shipping, etc.) is a real need.

This new website will provide transportation professionals and company officials with tools to ease their use of combined transport modes: rail/roal, waterways/road, short sea shipping, etc.). Many services are already available on the website such as creating optimal itineraries for shipments, compare prices and environmental impact of different operators, find specialized carriers, etc.

There are also information and documents about operators, associations, infrastructures managing companies, manufacturers, etc. Also, the website gathers documentation including best practices and regulations of combined transport modes. The services are currently only available in French but are expected to be extended to all European countries by 2009.
