In brief: a new inland waterways port near Paris
Posted on February 29, 2008 by Matthieu Desiderio
While Gennevilliers inland waterways terminal (north of Paris) is behing extended, the Autonomous Port of Paris (Port Autonome de Paris, PAP) just innaugurated a new containers terminal in the port of Limay-Porcheville in the Yvelines Département (west of Paris; a Département is the French subdivision of the territory, comparable to a County in the United States). The terminal will be operated by Limay Terminal, a subsidiary of SHGT (Société Havraise de Gestion et de Transport), and by Scat (Société coopérative de transport fluvial).
Two other terminal are in construction in Bruyères-sur-Oise (Val d’Oise, north of Paris) and in Montereau-Fault-Yonne (Seine et Marne, southeast of Paris). These two new infrastructures will be operated respectively in 2009 and 2010. They will be increasing annual handling capacity by 100,000 movements (100,000 more TEUs handled, full or empty) in the region. Paris port officials explain that these investments will also improve Le Havre port hinterland, and help anticipating the additionnal traffic that will be generated when the Seine-Nord Europe large clearance canal will be entering service.
These new terminals and waterways infrastructures will allow Paris port authorities to handle growing traffic: in the last two years, container traffic grew to 80,000 TEUs (+8.2%) from 2005 to 2006, and increased again 25% to 100, 000 containers in 2007.
