ELTIS: European portal for sustainable urban transport

Posted on February 27, 2008 by Matthieu Desiderio

Europe’s number one web portal on urban transport and mobility

The General Directorate for Transport and Energy of the European Commission in partnership with the European Towns and Regions Council (Conseil des Communes et Régions d’Europe, CCRE) recently created ELTIS, the European Local Transport Information Service.

The efficient movement of people and goods is one of the main challenges facing most European towns and cities today. Many initiatives to improve the mobility of people and the distribution of goods in an economically and environmentally efficient manner have been launched over the past few years.

In an attempt to exchange experiences, a great deal of information has already been published on the Internet and project reports, yet it is often inconsistent and hard to find. There is a pressing need for a comprehensive online information portal.

What can be found on ELTIS?

This new portal will gather information about urban and regional transport in Europe. It offers a broad range of sector news, presents upcoming events, policies and other initiatives in cities and regions across Europe.

The “Open project calls and tenders” section, private companies would be able to find information and links to proposals for urban and regional public transport projects that are financed by the European Union. The “Tools for practitioners” section provides local policy makers and officials a database of training programs, best practices guides, evaluation tools, practical guidelines and handbooks.

It is still in its first phase and will be probably improved in the next couple weeks but it will efinitely be a reference for people involved in urban transport: operators, projects managers, decision makers, etc.
